Our Mission

We are a leading provider of freely available, state-of-the-art, UX curricula. Our curricula are the basis for self-study and facilitated training, leading to independent UX certification, anywhere in the world.

About the International Usability and User Experience Qualification Board (UXQB)

The UXQB is responsible for the organisation, development and promotion of the CPUX programme – to date, the UXQB has created five curricula based on ISO 9241 standards. The UXQB works very closely with our partners and other organisations to be able to bring the CPUX programme to life – our Personal Members are an international, expert panel of UX professionals who help steer the direction of the UXQB; our National Experts actively contribute to the development of our curricula; our Recognised Training Providers offer high-quality training courses based on our curricula, and independent certification providers ensure the entire exam process is transparent and trustworthy.

A brief history of the UXQB

2006

Work on the certification programme began as far back as 2006, when the German UPA’s “Usability Occupational Field” working group defined the roles in usability engineering. These roles provided a structure for the discipline’s tasks and deliverables.

Building on this work, the German UPA developed a quality standard for usability engineering, which formed the basis for the professional work of usability professionals.

2013

The UXQB was founded in October 2013 based on an initiative of the “Quality Standards” working group, within the German Usability Professionals Association (UPA). The initial aim of the UXQB was to establish a credible and respected certification program for usability professionals, through the development of usability, user experience (UX) and human-centred design (HCD) curricula, based on international standards and current specialist literature.

2014

Based on these earlier initiatives, the Certified Professional for Usability and User Experience (CPUX) programme was launched, with over 400 people becoming CPUX-F certified by the end of that year.

2024

10 years later, more than 8,500 UX professionals have become CPUX-F certified and the CPUX programme has five, well structured, comprehensive curricula which outline methodical approaches to all aspects of UX and HCD.

Present

Our working groups meet regularly to review and revise the curricula content to ensure their high practical relevance, and to maintain close links to the ISO standards that inform their approach, and we continue to work with a number of independent, accredited certification providers to provide a credible path to CPUX certification for UX professionals throughout the world.

Our member organisations

The UXQB works with organisations and interest groups for usability and user experience all over the world. A key responsibility of our member organisations is nominating National Experts to actively participate in the development and advancement of the CPUX-program.

Our strategic partnerships

The UXQB has established key partnerships with leading organisations in areas related to the fields of UX and certification. In doing so, we aim to promote collaboration and cooperation between our experts and their organisations across our different disciplines. Our current strategic partners are:

IREB – International Requirements Engineering Qualification Board eV

UXQB and IREB have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to help promote and advance Usability and User Experience Engineering, and Requirements Engineering as complementary disciplines. We will work together to explore and develop opportunities to jointly promote certification and any supporting events.

The primary goals for our partnership are:

  • The development and support of Usability and User Experience Engineering and Requirements Engineering, as globally recognised professions and disciplines;
  • The promotion of the value of Usability and User Experience Engineering and Requirements Engineering and recognised certifications;
  • A strengthening of the UXQB and IREB community, to foster mutual recognition and collaboration between our members.
IIBA – International Institute of Business Analysis

UXQB and IIBA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support the relationship between and the learning development opportunities for the disciplines of usability and user experience, and business analysis. Our aims are supported by collaborating on webinars, conferences, articles, surveys, research and white papers on subjects related to our respective fields. Through collaboration, IIBA and UXQB will explore the potential for alignment between our certifications programs, and we will encourage continued education by offering discounted certification to our respective communities.

GTB – German Testing Board eV

UXQB and GTB have signed a cooperation agreement to connect the two previously separate career paths of software testing and usability testing. UXQB and GTB have developed a training programme, intended to help software testers and usability engineers gain insights into each other’s disciplines, and to recognise the differences and similarities between them. The training programme is a collaborative effort from the UXQB and GTB to ensure a balance between the career paths.
